Buruj Sports Academy Students Celebrate Fuji Icon Obesere on His 61st Birthday

Students of Buruj Sports Academy on Wednesday celebrated renowned Fuji music icon, Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere (PK1ST), AgbaAkin Abobagunwa of Yorubaland, as he marked his 61st birthday.The celebration took place at the academy’s training ground in Lagos, where students turned out in large numbers in a semi-party atmosphere to honour the legendary musician, who also serves as Chairman, Board of Trustees of Buruj Sports Academy—an institution dedicated to youth football development alongside classroom education.Speaking on behalf of the students, team captain and goalkeeper Edet expressed delight at celebrating the Fuji legend, describing him as a father figure and source of inspiration.

“We are very happy to celebrate Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere on his 61st birthday. We pray that Almighty God grants him long life, good health, and many more prosperous years ahead,”

Edet said.Another student, highly talented midfielder Todowede Tunmise, also offered prayers for the celebrant, acknowledging his impact on young people through music and sports.

“May God bless him with long life, sound health, wisdom, and continuous success. May his days be filled with joy, peace, and fulfilment as he continues to impact lives positively,” Tunmise prayed.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Buruj Sports Academy, Dr Waheed Buruji, described Obesere as a passionate advocate of youth development and empowerment, noting that his support for initiatives that uplift young people is unwavering.“

“Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere is someone who genuinely believes in youth development. His love for sports and music—two powerful tools the Nigerian youth have embraced—has become a game changer, transforming lives and creating opportunities,” Dr Buruji said.He added that it was a privilege for the academy to have Obesere as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, stressing that his contributions to the growth and development of the academy cannot be overstated.

“We pray that Almighty God continues to bless him, strengthen him, and reward his good heart with many more fruitful years,” he concluded.

Also present at the event was former Nigeria youth international Taiwo Oloyede, who paid glowing tribute to the Fuji star.“I have loved his music for a long time and I am a big fan. He is a true philanthropist. May God continue to bless him, grant him long life, and surround him with prosperity,” Oloyede said.

Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere is widely celebrated as the creator of the Asakasa Fuji music style, a revolutionary sound that broadened the appeal of Fuji music beyond traditional Yoruba settings, attracting youths and elites across Nigeria and beyond.

The Fuji icon is set to continue his 61st birthday celebrations at his newly built home in Ibadan, where the event will also feature a housewarming ceremony and the launch of his new studio album titled “Humility.”

The celebration at Buruj Sports Academy concluded with a friendly training match among the players, rounding off the day in a fitting display of sportsmanship and unity.
